House with many window options
Replacement windows can be made exactly to your liking. With so many choices out there, how will you ever decide on the right replacement window for you? Fortunately, there are several quality window replacement companies out there today that specialize in making custom windows designed just for your home. Before we dive into the plethora of replacement window options, we will assume you have done a little research to understand most window terminology.
The Window:
There are a few options when it comes to window material: wood, vinyl , vinyl-clad, fiberglass and aluminum, to name the most prominent window materials. All materials offer their own advantages with the trend leaning toward vinyl replacement windows. Vinyl replacement windows offer a great look and do not require the amount of upkeep that the other types of windows do. Additionally, vinyl replacement windows are the least expensive windows.
The Style:

Double hung window
Windows come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit your home. Styles vary from single-hung windows, double-hung windows, sliding windows, casement windows, awning windows, special shaped windows and more. Single-hung refers to one sash operating, while the double hung refers to a window where both sashes are operable, making it easy for cleaning and venting.
The Glass:
Glass thickness varies by manufacturer, so be sure to compare. The number of layers also varies form one, two and even three glass layers in a window. Energy Star® qualified windows will come with low-e baked into the glass (to qualify for the Energy Tax Credit, windows have to have a certain amount of low-e in the glass, be sure to ask your retailer). Windows also have the option of being filled with argon or krypton gasses which also help eliminate the transfer of heat and aids in outside noise reduction.
The color:
All vinyl replacement windows will be available in white, with beige also being another widely available option. Some manufacturers make vinyl replacement windows in different colors, but you will want to check with the manufacturer about possible fading in warm climates. The inside of the windows can also vary in color and some manufacturers give the option of a wood grain interior. You should not paint vinyl windows.
Of course wood windows can be painted any color you would like, as can aluminum windows. However, expect to repaint the windows every five years or so as paint fades and chips.
The extras:
Wanting to add a little more personality to your window? Try adding grids, etched glass, leaded glass and a number of other options to your windows. Shutters and blinds also help to personalize your window areas to meet the needs of your home style.
There are other options available that should also be taken into consideration including: lock types, night latches or vent stops, labor warranties, window warranties and more.
The purpose of this article is to inform window shoppers that there are many, many options available to them. Don’t just shop at one place, look around. Several window replacement companies boast window showrooms that have their windows on display. Make sure you take the time to choose the right windows for you and your home.
